Medication, Self-administration

 

Resident has a physician’s order to self-administer medications:

 

Inhaler

 

Metered Dose Inhaler for Asthma

 

 

 

Resident has been assessed by care plan team to be capable of self administration

 

 

Resident demonstrates ability to:

Follow simple directions

Remember directions consistently

Read prescription labels adequately

Identify medications by appearance

 

Resident will take medications safely and as prescribed

 

Resident will demonstrate ability to take medications at correct dose, route, and time

 

Resident will verbalize and demonstrate understanding of:

What each medication is supposed to do

What foods, drinks and other medications should be avoided while taking each medication

What the possible side effects are, and what should be done if they occur

 

 

Instruct resident to:

 

Inhale medication into the lungs instead of the back of the throat


Shake inhaler well before each use

 

Apply and use spacer and holding chamber correctly

 

Position inhaler correctly


Breathe out first through mouth before inhaling

 

Take a slow, deep breath and depress chamber

 

Hold breath 10 seconds afterward to allow medication to settle in lungs

Clean chamber and spacer

 

Resident to administer medications with supervision until self-administration abilities are verified

 

Encourage resident to ask questions

 

Review medication with resident weekly/monthly and as needed to re-assess abilities
