As evidenced by: Unable to make appropriate choices of attire Impaired ability to put on / take off clothing Unable to reach lower extremities
Able to dress lower body without assistance if clothing and shoes are laid out or handed to the patient
Someone must help the patient put on undergarments, slacks, socks or nylons, and shoes
Patient depends entirely upon another person to dress lower body |
Patient will be dressed appropriately, well groomed, and comfortable
Patient will assist with dressing and grooming by raising legs
Patient will demonstrate ability to dress lower body

Assess patient’s ability to Dress Lower Body (with or without dressing aids) including undergarments, slacks, socks or nylons, shoes
OT / PT evaluation as indicated
Assess need for and provide assistive devices such as long reacher, velcro, shoe horn
Needs assistance from the primary caregiver: Several times during day and night Several times during day Once daily Three or more times per week One to two times per week Less often than weekly
Instruct caregivers to:
Encourage patient to participate in dressing, and praise accomplishments
Assist only as necessary
Give patient choices of attire
Allow sufficient time for dressing and undressing
Break tasks down into manageable segments
Keep most frequently used items within reach
Provide loose fitting clothing with easy fasteners
Monitor for any changes in dressing ability |
